Gymnastics: Bieski, Tabor Retain National Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnasts Amy Bieski and Chelsi Tabor retained their respective all-around and vault rankings in this week’s GymInfo Poll.
Bieski, a junior and native of Nanticoke, Pa., ranks 37th in the all-around with a 39.145 regional qualifying score (RQS), while Tabor, a senior and native of Beckley, W.Va., ranks 47th on vault with a 9.855 RQS.
Both gymnasts recently earned East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) honors in their respective events. Bieski, WVU’s lone all-arounder, was named to the all-EAGL first team, while Tabor was named to the vault second team.
The Mountaineers (19-9, 12-2 EAGL) jumped two spots in the Southeast region rankings and are ranked third this week with a 194.81 RQS. The squad also ranks fourth on bars (48.69) and beam (48.58), fifth on vault (48.905) and sixth on floor (48.80).
Bieski and Tabor are the only Mountaineers ranked within the region’s top 10; Bieski is fourth in all-around and Tabor is 10th on vault.

The Mountaineers are most-frequently ranked on beam this week, with four gymnasts residing within the region’s top 25. Senior Kiersten Spoerke paces the team and ranks 16th (9.765). Bieski ranks 17th (9.76) in the region, while senior Shelly Purkat ranks 20th (9.75) and Tabor ranks 21st (9.74).
Bieski and sophomore Tina Maloney join Tabor on the vault rankings at No. 18 (9.815) and No. 24 (9.77), respectively. Additionally, Bieski and Maloney are respectively ranked 14th (9.84) and 21st (9.795) on floor.
Sophomore Nicole Roach and Bieski represent the Mountaineers on the bars rankings and are tied at No. 17 (9.79).
Following a 195.075, third-place performance at the league championship on March 27, the Mountaineers jumped from third to first. The squad also is ranked second on bars and beam, fourth on vault and fifth on floor.
Bieski and Tabor are the highest-ranked Mountaineer gymnasts in the EAGL with respective No. 2 rankings on all-around and vault. Bieski is also ranked seventh on floor, eighth on bars and ninth on beam.
Roach joins Bieski at No. 8 on the bars list, while Spoerke and Purkat sandwich Bieski on the beam rankings at No. 7 and No. 9.
The Mountaineers’ third-place showing at the league championship was the team’s second-best score of the season. Bieski finished seventh overall with 39.1 points. She also finished sixth on floor with a team-best 9.8 mark. Junior Alysha Pretzello anchored WVU’s bars lineup and finished seventh overall with a career-best 9.825 showing, the meet’s fourth-best score. Maloney paced the Mountaineers on vault and finished eighth overall with a season-best 9.825 score, while Spoerke tallied a team-best 9.8 on beam and finished in sixth place.
WVU now awaits word on its seeding for the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional Championship. The Mountaineers will play host to the meet on Saturday, April 10, at 6 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
