MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will begin its regular season March 27, as it travels to Lake Lure, N.C. to compete against Ohio State Club in an 8 a.m. race.
“It is difficult to predict how the competition will go because we haven't raced Ohio State Club before,” says coach Jimmy King. “All I know is that it is a well-established and competitive club program, so we'll be prepared for their best efforts.”
The Mountaineers will compete as soon as they arrive on Lake Lure for spring training camp, while Ohio State Club finishes its week of training.
"We're spending a lot of time working on racing starts and pushing the rate along in water workouts to make sure we're ready to go at a competitive racing cadence,” adds King. “But given this will be the first competition of the spring, nothing is for certain until we get out on the water and start racing.”
WVU was originally scheduled to start its season on March 13, in Dayton, Ohio. The race against Dayton and Duquesne was canceled due to inclement weather.
“The team was disappointed that our first scheduled competition of the year was canceled,” says King, “so we are very eager to get our spring season underway and assess the degree of progress we've made in our training since the fall.”
The Mountaineers will wrap-up their week at camp with a race against the Tarheels on April 2.
“The racing we do against Ohio State Club at the start of our week-long training camp will aid us in focusing our efforts in preparation for UNC at the end of the week,” King concludes. “I expect all of our crews to be competitive in our racing this weekend.”
