MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team defeated Coastal Carolina, today, in a 4-3 match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“I’m very proud of the girls’ performance and I think they are showing that they have a lot of resilience in matches like these,” says coach Marc Walters.
The Mountaineers now move to 12-2 in the regular season and 4-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Chanticleers fell to 11-3.
CCU captured the doubles point with WVU’s lone doubles win by the No. 2 doubles pair of sophomore Veronica Cardenas and freshman Emily Mathis in an 8-2 match against the Chanticleer’s Alex Derungs and Caitlyn Brooksbank.
“Cardenas and Mathis had terrific weekends and were really a force together in the doubles competition today,” adds Walters. “These are two solid players and they are both making nice strides this season.”
The Mountaineers continued to fall behind in the singles competition as they dropped matches in the No. 1 and 2 spots, leaving them at a 0-3 deficit.
WVU turned the score around as Cardenas (No. 3), Mathis (No. 4) and junior Ashley Pilsbury (No. 6) captured wins in the singles competition to tie the match, 3-3. Sophomore Kathryn Haught clinched the win for the Mountaineers as she defeated CCU’s Mary Hill, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, in the No. 5 spot.
“The girls came through when their backs were against the wall and they found a way to win the match,” Walters concludes. “It was pretty impressive and was yet another big win for us this season.”
The Mountaineers will continue action on March 20, as they travel to face Missouri and Houston in Columbia, Mo.
