MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A program-best 15 West Virginia University gymnasts have been named to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) 2010 all-Academic Team.
WVU previously had 14 Mountaineers named to the 2007 and 2009 teams.
“We’re very proud of these honors,” says 36-year coach Linda Burdette-Good. “These recognitions show that this team knows how to prioritize. Each of these gymnasts works hard in the gym and in the classroom. Those are the kind of scholar-athletes you want.”
Seniors Shelly Purkat (human nutrition and foods), Kiersten Spoerke (mechanical engineering) and Ashley Wilson (exercise physiology) all earned the honor for the fourth time. In program history, 14 Mountaineers have earned the award for four-straight years.
Additionally, senior Chelsi Tabor (physical education) earned the honor for the third-straight season.
Four juniors earned the team honor for the third time: Amy Bieski (speech pathology and audiology), Naja Johnson (multiple disciplinary studies), Stephanie Keaton (fashion design) and Faye Meaden (exercise physiology). Classmates Emily Kerwin (graphic design) and Jessica Young (journalism) also earned the honor for the first and second time, respectively.

Sophomores Tina Maloney (nursing) and Jenn Sharon (child development and family studies) were each recognized for the second time, while freshmen Hailey Fairchild (pre-sport management), Arlene Hathaway (pre-elementary education) and Alaska Richardson (general studies) all earned their first honor.
A total of 94 student-athletes from eight EAGL schools were named to the all-academic team. Rutgers placed a league-best 18 gymnasts on the team, while New Hampshire matched WVU’s 15 recognitions.
In order to be named to the EAGL all-Academic team, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Freshmen are eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
WVU closes out its regular season and plays host to Bridgeport on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. Purkat, Spoerke, Tabor and Wilson will be recognized following the meet
