MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For just the second time in 21 years West Virginia is going to finish the season ranked in the Associated Press Men’s Basketball Top 25 poll. The Mountaineers are ranked No. 6 this week after winning their first-ever Big East tournament championship last Saturday against Georgetown in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
It is the school’s highest final ranking in the AP poll since finishing fifth in 1960. The Associated Press does not release a poll following the NCAA tournament.
The ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll will announce its final rankings on Tuesday following the national championship game.
West Virginia finished No. 22 in the AP poll in 2006 under former coach John Beilein. Before that, the Mountaineers were No. 17 in 1989 and No. 14 in 1982 under Gale Catlett.
WVU had seven straight finishes in the AP poll from 1955-61, including a No. 1 final ranking in 1958.
The Mountaineers have made 14 appearances in the final coaches’ poll rankings, including a 17th place finish in 2008 under current coach Bob Huggins and back-to-back top 25 finishes in 2005 (12th) and 2006 (15th) under John Beilein.
West Virginia (27-6) will face Morgan State on Friday, March 19, at 12:15 p.m. in an NCAA tournament first round game in Buffalo, N.Y.
