Carrier Named WVU Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Student-athlete Chelsea Carrier has been named the WVU Athlete of the Week for her performance last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native and Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year, earned her first-ever All-America honors with a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon as she scored 4,133 total points. She finished first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.29), fifth in the 800-meter run (2:19.49), tied for fifth in the high jump (1.71 meters) and placed 16th in the shot put (10.40 meters). The finish is the second best performance of her career and places her second on WVU’s all-time performance list for the event.
Later in the day, Carrier returned to earn her second All-America honor in the 60-meter hurdles with a sixth-place showing in the finals, as she crossed the line in 8.29.

Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia went 1-1 last week, advancing to its second BIG EAST Championship … the No. 2 seed Mountaineers advanced to the finals of the 2010 Big East Women’s Basketball Championship by beating No. 6 seed Rutgers, 56-49, on Monday evening at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. … against Rutgers, the Mountaineers used an unlikely offensive threat in Sarah Miles, who finished with a game and season-high 18 points … Asya Bussie scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field, while pulling down six rebounds and recording three blocks … in the championship game against Connecticut, the Mountaineers fell 60-32 … juniors Liz Repella, Sarah Miles and Korinne Campbell managed a combined 8-of-27 from the field, including Repella going 1-of-6 from 3-point range … Repella was face guarded by UConn for the majority of the night and had very few clean looks at the basket … the Mountaineers used an 8-0 run starting at the 19:26 mark with a Campbell layup to bring the game to 33-28, the closet WVU was able to get … five points from Repella, including her lone 3-pointer, and a free throw from sophomore Natalie Burton, capped the run … UConn managed to go on a 32-4 run to close out the game, while the Mountaineers went 2-of-20 from the field in the final 15 minutes, with UConn shooting 10-of-17 and outrebounding WVU by 15 in the span.
Notes and Quotes: West Virginia will be making its sixth NCAA appearance and fourth under Mike Carey … it will be the third appearance in the last four years, a school record … Repella and Miles were named to the BIG EAST all-tournament team, becoming the fourth and fifth Mountaineers in school history to do so.
This Week in Baseball: The West Virginia University baseball team wraps up its first homestand of the season with six scheduled games … the Mountaineers begin the week with a doubleheader against Niagara beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday … WVU follows with a four-game series against Eastern Michigan this weekend, including a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday, a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a noon first pitch on Sunday.
Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia went 2-2 for the second consecutive week, defeating Bryant, 7-5, last Thursday and routing Manhattan, 14-4, last Sunday … WVU fell in a doubleheader to the Jaspers last Friday, losing by scores of 4-3 and 13-1.
Notes and Quotes: Senior reliever Chris Enourato earned a save against Bryant last Thursday evening to give him his 58th career appearance … the number puts him in a tie for first on the school’s all-time list with former Mountaineers Jeremy Cummings (1996-99), Keith Mathias (1988-91) and Jim Heise (1953-56) … junior Jedd Gyorko finished 3-for-5 with two home runs, one double and three RBIs in WVU’s 14-4 rout over Manhattan on Sunday … it is the second multi-home run performance of Gyorko’s career, with his first coming as a freshman on March 24, 2008, against Coppin State … Chase Pickering earned his first victory of the season by defeating Manhattan on Sunday … Pickering tied a career-high with five strikeouts … junior Dom Hayes and Gyorko each carry six-game hitting streaks … Hayes also leads the Mountaineers with a .460 batting average and has nine multi-hit games, including six straight.
This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers close out their regular-season and play host to Bridgeport on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum … seniors Shelly Purkat, Kiersten Spoerke, Chelsi Tabor and Ashley Wilson will be recognized following the meet.
Last Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers (13-7, 7-0 EAGL) earned a 193.775-193.0 victory at North Carolina on Saturday, March 13 … WVU split the apparatus wins with UNC, finishing first on vault (48.975-48.9) and beam (48.45-47.475) and earned the win despite falling behind, 48.9-47.725, through one rotation … the Mountaineers also scored 47.725 on bars and 48.625 on floor … junior Amy Bieski finished first overall with 39.125 points … the Nanticoke, Pa., native also tied for first on vault (9.825), tied for second on bars (9.75), finished third on floor (9.85) and tied for fourth on beam (9.7) … Tabor and sophomore Tina Maloney tied Bieski on vault … sophomore Nicole Roach also finished second on bars … senior Shelly Purkat paced the squad on beam with a third-place 9.725 showing.

This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers have completed their 2009-10 season.
Last Week in Rifle: WVU (11-0, 7-0 GARC) finished third at the 2010 NCAA Championships, in Fort Worth, Texas, with an aggregate score of 4641 … the Mountaineers finished fifth in air gun (2333) and third in smallbore (2308) … senior Bryant Wallizer earned the highest individual finish, as he shot 583 in the smallbore relay and 96.3 in the finals to finished sixth overall … junior Brandi Eskew finished eighth in smallbore with a 581 relay score and 96.8 in the finals … junior Tommy Santelli finished 10th in smallbore with a 579 relay score … sophomore Justin Pentz shot as an individual smallbore qualifier and finished in 18th place (576) … junior Andy Lamson added the fourth team score and shot 565 … Lamson paced the squad in air rifle and tied for 12th place with a 587 score … Kulbacki shot 584, while Wallizer shot 582 and Santelli tallied a 580 score.

This Week in Track & Field: The West Virginia University track and field team is set to begin the outdoor season with the Wake Forest Demon Deacon Open in Winston Salem, N.C., on March 20.
Last Week in Track & Field: WVU completed the 2010 indoor season with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13, in Fayetteville, Ark. … the Mountaineers ended the weekend with seven student-athletes earning All-America honors … WVU earned the highest ranking of any BIG EAST team as it scored 18 points for 10th place … Oregon finished in the top spot with 61 points, while Tennessee finished second (36), LSU in third (35), Florida in fourth (33) and Texas A&M in fifth (31).

Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers rose to 11-2, 4-0 in the BIG EAST after they defeated California (Pa.) on Sunday, in a 4-3 match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
Notes and Quotes: The Mountaineers started off the day by capturing the doubles point … the No. 1 pair of senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton earned a 9-7 win over the Vulcans’ Nina Kowalski and Alina Stanila … No. 2 pair of sophomore Veronica Cardenas and freshman Emily Mathis captured and 8-4 victory … in the singles competition, Burton and Mathis captured wins in the No. 2 and 4 spots … LaFortune and Cardenas were defeated in the No. 1 and 3 spots … the match was tied at 3-3 after freshman Liv Pettersson lost in a 3-6, 3-6 match against Pondica … junior Ashley Pilsbury secured the win for the Mountaineers as she defeated the Vulcans’ Galina Vishnikina, 6-4, 6-2.
This Week in Wrestling: Three Mountaineers earned bids to the NCAA Wrestling Championships … the three-day event, from Thursday, March 18-20, will take place at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. … the first session on Thursday will begin at noon.

Notes and Quotes: Redshirt senior Donnie Jones (165) will be making his third trip to the NCAA Championships … freshman Shane Young (125) and junior college transfer Brandon Williamson (HWT) will be making their first trips to the event … Jones’ first-round match comes against Iowa’s Ryan Morningstar, a No. 7 seed … the two squared off last year in the first round of the tournament, with Morningstar earning the win … Young will face Cal-State Bakersfield’s Frank Lomas, a redshirt sophomore who earned an at-large bid, and is 22-15 this season … Williamson’s is matched up against Central Michigan’s Jarod Trice, a No. 7 seed … Jones has faced nine of the 33 wrestlers in his weight class this season, while Young and Williamson each have faced six … Young is the first 125-pounder for the Mountaineers to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships since Shawn Cordelll did back in 2005.

Last Week in Rowing: WVU’s first race of the spring season against Dayton and Duquesne was cancelled due to inclement weather in Dayton, Ohio.
Notes and Quotes: WVU completed its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, with a bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan in Blacksburg, Va. … the varsity open four team ‘A’ boat crossed the line in 19:59.41 behind Duke’s team ‘A’ (19:26.23) and team ‘B’ (19:42.14) boats, earning them the bronze medal for the second year in a row.
