Gymnastics: WVU Retains Top 25 Floor Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s gymnastics team is nationally ranked 20th on the floor with a 48.81 regional qualifying score (RQS) in today’s GymInfo Poll.
The Mountaineers (11-7, 6-0 EAGL) dropped to No. 26 overall this week with a 194.195 RQS. The team reentered the top 25 last week at No. 25.
Junior Amy Bieski is the lone Mountaineer in the national rankings this week. The Nanticoke, Pa., native ranks 33rd in the all-around (38.9 RQS) and 47th on floor (9.815).
WVU moved up to third in the region on beam with a 48.25 RQS. The Mountaineers remained third on floor and fourth overall, on vault (48.71) and bars (48.25).
Bieski paces the Mountaineers with five regional rankings. She is third in the all-around, seventh on floor, 12th on beam (9.72), 13th on vault (9.775) and 14th on bars (9.75).
The Mountaineers are most-frequently ranked on beam. Senior Chelsi Tabor follows Bieski and is ranked 13th (9.715). Also ranked on beam are sophomore Nicole Roach (No. 22, 9.605), senior Shelly Purkat (No. 23, 9.595) and freshman Chelsea Goldschrafe (9.52).
Tabor, a Beckley, W.Va., native, is also ranked ninth on vault (9.81). Sophomore Tina Maloney (No. 19, 9.725) and senior Ashley Wilson (No. 24, 9.66 RQS) also are regionally ranked on the apparatus.
Maloney follows Bieski in the floor poll and is ranked 10th (9.795). Also ranked on floor are senior Kiersten Spoerke (No. 17, 9.725) and junior Stephanie Keaton (9.69).
Roach (No. 16, 9.74), junior Faye Meaden (No. 18, 9.685) and Wilson (No. 20, 9.66) are regionally ranked on bars.
The Mountaineers retained their top East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) beam and floor rankings. The squad also stayed steady at No. 2 overall and at No. 3 on bars, and dropped one spot to No. 3 on vault.
Combined, Bieski and Tabor own three No. 1 rankings. Bieski is first on floor and all-around, while Tabor is tops on vault.
Additionally, Bieski is ranked fourth on bars, sixth on beam and eighth on vault, while Tabor is seventh on beam.
Also, Maloney is sixth on floor and Roach is seventh on bars.
The Mountaineers are coming off of a 192.975, fourth-place finish at Nebraska’s Masters Classic on Feb. 28. WVU finished fourth on each event but beam, where the team scored 48.05 and finished third. The Mountaineers also scored 48.225 on vault, 48.15 on bars and 48.55 on floor.
WVU returns home this week and plays host to Bowling Green at the WVU Coliseum on March 6, at 1 p.m. Saturday’s contest is an Alumni Meet and a Dollar Day, with all tickets and select concessions priced $1 each.
