WEST VIRGINIA GAME NOTES | SYRACUSE GAME NOTES
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The eighth-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team will play in its season finale Monday night at the Carrier Dome against Syracuse at 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers (26-3, 13-2) will be meeting the Orange for the 20th time in the series with WVU holding an 11-8 edge and having won eight straight times against Syracuse. Last year in the WVU Coliseum, the Mountaineers pulled out a nail-biting 69-68 win. Sarah Miles and Natalie Burton each scored 10 points apiece.
With a win tonight, West Virginia will look to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Big East tournament with the Mountaineers already ensuring themselves a double-bye. West Virginia is coming off a win 69-56 win over Marquette.
“We want to win. I don’t want to go into that tournament with a loss,” Coach Mike Carey said. “We’re going to play everybody and we’re going up to Syracuse to try to win.”
Syracuse (19-9, 6-9) is led by a balanced scoring attack that features Nicole Michael and Erica Morrow in the starting five. Michael averages 15.4 points and eight rebounds per game and has a SU record 24 career 20-plus point games. Morrow is averaging 11 points per game. Kayla Alexander has been playing big minutes off the bench for the Orange, averaging 10.3 points per game.
“They’re very athletic with the Michael girl,” Carey said. “They have a lot of girls that were high school All-Americans. They’ve been together for two- three years. They play a 2-3 zone like the men do at Syracuse. They’re all long, athletic and run the floor very well. They’re very physical. It’s going to be a tough game.”
With the Marquette win last Saturday, West Virginia tied the 1991-92 team for most wins in a regular season, secured its second undefeated home season in school history, and clinched a top-four finish in the Big East for the third time in the last four season.
Monday’s contest will air on MSN Radio with play-by-play announcer Travis Jones on the call.
