MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., on Feb. 11, for a noon match against BIG EAST rival Pitt.
“We should be in a great place in these upcoming conference battles. We have six matches under our belt and we’re playing competitively at every spot in the lineup,” says coach Marc Walters. “We are ready to battle Pitt evenly and we have a lot of confidence in our performance.”
The Mountaineers finished last weekend 1-2, after being defeated by Marshall (0-7) and Miami-Ohio (1-6). WVU came back with a win on Sunday in a close match against Eastern Kentucky (4-3) to bring its overall regular season record to 4-2.
Senior Stephanie LaFortune will be back in action as WVU’s No. 1 singles player, followed by redshirt junior Monique Burton, sophomore Veronica Cardenas, freshman Emily Mathis, sophomore Kathryn Haught and junior Ashley Pilsbury in the No. 2-6 spots.
The Mountaineers fell to the Panthers 4-3, last season in a hard-fought match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“Everyone is playing well and the momentum we feel is a nice plus going into this match,” adds Walters. “All conference battles are huge and we have dropped three-straight after dominating them for years, so we are hungry to reverse the trend.”
