MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team scored 194.475 and split its tri-meet with No. 15 Michigan and William & Mary this evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (10-3, 6-0 EAGL) defeated the Tribe (187.725) and lost to the Wolverines (196.4). The defeat snaps WVU’s eight-meet win streak; the squad had not dropped a contest since going 1-2 in its season opener on Jan. 8.
Though WVU finished second to UM in each event tonight, the Mountaineers earned a season-high mark on beam with 48.475 points. The squad also scored 48.725 on vault, 48.55 on bars and 48.725 on floor.
Junior Amy Bieski tallied 39.025 points to finish second overall. The Nanticoke, Pa., native’s combined total is her second 39.0-plus score of the season and career ninth; she now has sole possession of 10th place for the most career 39.0-plus all-around scores.
Bieski was the lone Mountaineer to finish in the top three in an event this evening, as she matched a season-high on floor with a second-place 9.825 showing.
UM’s Kylee Botterman finished first overall with 39.55 points; the Wolverine placed first in each event but vault.
The Wolverines' 49.2 bars score pushed them to the top spot through one rotation. The Mountaineers tallied 48.725 on vault, while the Tribe scored 45.75 on beam.
Bieski and senior Chelsi Tabor paced the Mountaineers on vault and tied for sixth place with matching 9.775 scores; the mark equals Bieski's season-high. Also achieving season-best scores were senior Ashley Wilson (9.7) and freshman Alaska Richardson (9.75).
Despite scoring 48.55 on bars, the team's second-best score of the season, the Mountaineers continued to sit in second place after two rotations with 97.275 points. UM earned 48.925 points on beam and maintained its first-place standing with a score of 98.125, while W&M scored 46.6 on floor and pushed its team score to 92.35.

Juniors Faye Meaden and Alysha Pretzello highlighted another strong bars showing for the Mountaineers, as each tallied a career-best 9.75 score and finished sixth overall. Bieski finished behind her classmates with a 9.7, while Wilson and sophomore Nicole Roach each earned 9.675 points.
The Wolverines put distance between themselves and the Mountaineers in the third rotation, scoring 49.025 on floor for a running total of 147.15. WVU’s exciting 48.475 beam showing inflated the team’s point total to 145.75. The Tribe scored 47.85 points on vault for a 140.2 total.
Tabor and classmate Shelly Purkat shone brightest for the Mountaineer beam lineup. The pair each notched season-best 9.8 scores and tied for fifth place; Tabor's mark is a career-best. Bieski finished third on the team with a 9.725 score.
Bieski's 9.825 floor-anchoring performance rose to the top for the Mountaineers in their final rotation. Sophomore Tina Maloney finished second on the squad and fifth overall with 9.775 points, while Purkat, in her season-debut, scored 9.75 points.
UM concluded the meet with a 49.25 vault showing, while W&M scored 47.525 on bars.
The Mountaineers continue their home stand next week and play host to Ohio State in their annual Pink Meet on Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
