TAMPA – Korinne Campbell scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to power ninth-ranked West Virginia to a 54-45 victory over USF Saturday at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa.
It was Campbell’s second straight double-double for the streaking Mountaineers, now tied with Georgetown for second place in the Big East standings with 11-2 records. Earlier today, the Hoyas knocked off ailing Notre Dame 76-66 in Washington, D.C. WVU has won four straight since losing at No. 1 Connecticut on Feb. 2.
West Virginia presently owns the tiebreaker over Georgetown in the conference standings with last Saturday’s 55-46 win in Morgantown. This evening against USF, the Mountaineers controlled the glass, 49-34 and got nine offensive rebounds from Campbell – the most since Yinka Sanni pulled down that many in the season opener against Canisius in 2007-08.
After trailing 5-2, West Virginia (24-3, 11-2) used a 16-3 run to take a 10-point, 18-8, lead after a Sarah Miles jumper with 9:51 remaining in the first half.
USF (14-11, 5-8) cut West Virginia’s lead to two, 22-20, on an Aleshia Flowers layup with 30 seconds left in the half. But backup point guard Akeema Richards answered with a layup with eight seconds to give the Mountaineers a 24-20 halftime lead.
In the second half, Vanessa House came off the bench to hit two big 3-point jumpers to give West Virginia a 43-34 lead with 7:58 remaining. After House’s 3s, the closest USF could get was five points, 45-40, with 5:51 to go.
Madina Ali contributed 10 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Sarah Miles handed out a career-high 10 assists. Freshman center Asya Bussie added five blocks and now boasts 55 on the year, the most by a Mountaineers since Georgeann Wells recorded 140 in 1986. Bussie is now tied with Wells for most blocks by a freshman.
Kaneisha Saunders scored 18 points and Leondra Doomes-Stephens added 14 for the Bulls. South Florida shot just 26.7% (16 of 60) for the game and became the 22nd Mountaineer opponent to be held under 60 points by WVU's stingy defense.
West Virginia, now one victory shy of equaling the school record of 25 regular season wins established in 1991-92, committed 17 turnovers.
The Mountaineers return to the road to face Cincinnati on Tuesday night. The Bearcats lost at home to Villanova 60-57 earlier tonight.
West Virginia wraps up its regular season home schedule next Saturday against Marquette.
