MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team will host a BIG EAST match against Georgetown at the Ridgeview Racquet Club on Feb. 19, at 3 p.m.
“Georgetown has a new game and has opened their season with a solid win over a good Pennsylvania team, so they are going to be confident going into this match,” says coach Marc Walters. “We just need to get control right from the start and get into a rhythm early on so that we don’t let them get comfortable.”
The Mountaineers last competed on Feb. 11, where they defeated BIG EAST rival Pitt in a 5-2 match in Pittsburgh, Pa.
WVU captured the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 3 spots, followed by four singles victories by the Mountaineers’ No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 players to secure the upset.
“I am really impressed with all of the girls, but I like what Monique (Burton) has been doing in her preparation and execution during our matches,“ says Walters. “She has the ability to lead us and drive the momentum for the team.”
Redshirt junior Monique Burton contributes to the Mountaineers as the No. 2 singles competitor and in the No. 1 doubles pair with senior Stephanie LaFortune.
WVU currently holds a season record of 5-2, after defeating Youngstown (5-1), Liberty (5-2), James Madison (4-3), Eastern Kentucky (4-3) and Pitt. Upsets in hard fought matches against Marshall and Miami (Ohio) left the Mountaineers with their only two losses of the season.
“I think we are ready to compete at home and put our experience to the test," concludes Walters. "It should be a good BIG EAST tennis match.”
