Swimming: WVU Sets Multiple Records on Day One

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The West Virginia men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2010 BIG EAST Championships by competing in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay events and setting new BIG EAST, school and pool records on Wednesday evening at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The women put forth an impressive performance to earn first place in the 800 freestyle relay. Morgan Callaway, Shaunna Purtell, Robyn Matthews and Rachael Burnett teamed up for a time of 7:10.03, an NCAA “B” qualifying cut and a BIG EAST, school and pool record. Callaway also broke her own school record, as well as the pool record with her opening leg 200 backstroke swim of 1:45.96. The closet competitor was Villanova who finished six seconds behind West Virginia.
In the 200 medley relay, Callaway, Matthews, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews teamed together to score third place with a school-record time of 1:40.29, an NCAA “B” cut.
The women currently sit in sixth place with 72 points, while Notre Dame (165 points), Louisville (148 points), Pitt (111 points), Rutgers (80 points) and Connecticut (80 points) all sit in front of West Virginia.
The men finished the 800 freestyle relay in third place with a time of 6:33.35. Jared Goldthorpe, Hugh Simmonds, Taylor Camp and George Farquhar all swam in the NCAA “B” cut time.
In the 200 medley relay, Goldthorpe, Farquhar, Camp and Brad Eichenseer swam to a second-place finish with a time of 1:28.77, the fourth NCAA “B” cut of the day.
The men currently hold fourth place with 95 points and trail Notre Dame (173 points), Pitt (149 points) and Connecticut (131 points).
The championships will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with the preliminary rounds of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle. The finals will commence at 6 p.m. and include the 200 freestyle relay.
