MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams will take four divers to Pittsburgh, Pa., to compete in the diving portion of the 2010 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships from Feb. 12-14 at Trees Pool.
Seniors Brandon Robinson and Ashley Malik, sophomore Matt O’Neill and freshman Ethan Robinson will represent the Mountaineers at the three-day event.
“We are excited that this year’s BIG EAST Championships will start out with our divers,” coach Vic Riggs says. “They have performed and trained so well this year and all of them have the possibility of reaching the finals.”
This has been one of the best years in WVU diving history under first-year diving graduate assistant coach Liza Marianni. Marianni herself was a four-year BIG EAST qualifier at Connecticut and finalist multiple times.
This season the team has rewritten the record books with Brandon Robinson breaking the 1-meter school record with a score of 319.65 and O’Neill breaking the 3-meter school record with a score of 364.95. Malik also holds the 1-meter school record with a 280.75 performance.
Brandon Robinson and Malik are both four-year qualifiers, while O’Neill is a two-year qualifier and Ethan Robinson will be making his first appearance at the championships.
The women’s portion will begin Friday, Feb. 12, with the preliminary round on the 1-meter board beginning at 1 p.m. and the finals taking place at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, the men will begin the preliminary round at 10 a.m. on the 1-meter board, while the women will dive off the 3-meter board at 12:15 p.m. in the preliminary round. The men’s final on Saturday will be at 5:45 p.m., while the women’s will commence at 7:15 p.m.
The final day of competition on Sunday, Feb. 14 will feature the men’s 1-meter dive. The preliminary round begins at 11 a.m., with the finals beginning at 1:45 p.m.
The swimming portion of the championships will be from Feb. 17-20, also at Pitt.
