MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rower, senior Kimberly Benda was awarded last Friday as a 2009-10 BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete.
“I'm thrilled that Kim has been selected as WVU's Big East Female Scholar-Athlete,” says coach Jimmy King. “We're very proud of her academic and athletic accomplishments and appreciate that she has been recognized for her efforts.”
Benda is one of the 16 female athletes awarded who will receive $2,000 toward graduate studies to continue her education.
The Comox, B.C., native is a member of WVU’s athletic director’s academic honor roll and was named a National Scholar Athlete by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association for two-straight years (2007-09). Benda has made the dean's list every semester at WVU, and has also earned honors on the President's list.
The animal and nutrition sciences major is a four-year member of the varsity squad and the current captain for the WVU rowing team. Benda has contributed to several medals won by the varsity 4+ and 8+ boats and will continue to be a large contributor to the team’s success going into the season.
“Kim's success, like that of many of WVU's stellar student-athletes, is largely due to the consistent effort she puts forth towards the high standards and goals she sets for herself,” adds King. “Not only do I congratulate Kim, but I thank her for all of her contributions to our rowing program.”
