MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia jumped three spots in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ polls released this morning.
The Mountaineers are now sixth in both polls after last Saturday’s come-from-behind, 77-74 victory over Louisville. West Virginia reached sixth in the polls before the Purdue loss after starting the season ranked eighth.
It is the highest ranking the Mountaineers have ever achieved in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Prior to this year, the last time West Virginia reached sixth in the AP rankings was Feb. 23, 1982 during Gale Catlett’s fourth season with the program. The school’s last appearance in the top 5 came on Dec. 4, 1962 when WVU was ranked third.
West Virginia returns to action Wednesday night to face No. 22 Pitt at the Coliseum in a 7 p.m. Big East clash that will be televised on the Big East Network.
