Football: Thomas Named Defensive Player of Week

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia University linebacker J.T. Thomas has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for his performance last Saturday against Rutgers, the conference announced today.
Thomas, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led a West Virginia defense that held Rutgers to 203 yards of offense and 14 points in a 35-14 win, helping the Mountaineers to a share of the BIG EAST title. He finished with seven tackles, including a forced fumble and a 12-yard fumble return in the first quarter that set up the Mountaineers’ first touchdown. Thomas leads a West Virginia unit that ranks second nationally in rushing defense (85.1 ypg) and scoring defense (12.8 ppg).
A redshirt senior and three-year starter at weak-side linebacker, Thomas has recorded 2.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, four pass breakups and three fumble recoveries. For his career, Thomas has 223 tackles, including six sacks, 28.5 tackles for loss and 13 pass breakups.
The Mountaineers (9-3) will next face North Carolina State (8-4) in the Champs Sports Bowl to be played at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010.
