Women's Basketball: Mountaineers Defeat High Point

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Taylor Palmer and Vanessa House combined for 30 points off the bench to help lead the No. 10 ranked Mountaineers to an 89-57 victory over the High Point Panthers at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday night.
The Mountaineers (8-0) have now extended their consecutive home game winning streak to 24 wins, and are now 57-3 all-time at home in non-conference play under coach Mike Carey.
A solid team effort all around, several players put up top performances for the Mountaineers. Palmer sank six three-pointers to tally 18 of her career-high 22 points, while House put up eight points on 5-of-7 shooting. Asya Bussie put up 14 points while collecting nine boards, coming up one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season, and Madina Ali put up 13 points and grabbed eight boards, coming up two rebounds shy of her fourth double-double of the season.
“I thought they started out boxing in on Liz (Repella), so once we got some shooters with Vanessa (House) and Taylor (Palmer) hitting some threes, things started to pick up. Asya Bussie was more active tonight than she has been so that was good to see,” said coach Carey.
Defensively, Korinne Campbell grabbed 11 boards and three steals to help effectively shut down High Point’s offense. She also was just shy of a double-double, having scored nine points in addition to her double-digit rebounds. Brooke Hampton scored 14 points and tallied six assists, while once again securely protecting the ball by not turning it over. With only three turnovers on the season, she has yet to turn the ball over in any game that she starts.
“Brooke’s assist to turnover ratio has to be very, very high, which is good to see,” coach Carey said.
High Point kept pace with West Virginia for most of the first half, holding the Mountaineers to only seven points during the first six minutes of play, while putting up five points of their own. Ali and Bussie were able to provide a spark for the offense, each making layups right before House came in off the bench to sink a pair of threes, helping the offense pull away.
In addition, the defense was able to hold the Panthers (4-5) to 31 percent (9-of-29) from inside the arc, and 30 percent (3-of-10) from the three-point line during the first half, while capitalizing and scoring ten points on nine High Point turnovers.
“Coach Carey stresses defense a lot,” commented Palmer. “Basically, if you don’t play defense, then you are not going to play.”
Sophomore guard Erin Reynolds led the Panthers in scoring, accumulating 20 points and two rebounds in only 21 minutes of play. Guard Frances Fields and forward Mackenzie Maier also pitched in for the Panthers, combining for 14 points and five rebounds. Forwards Shamia Brown and Cheyenne Parker also combined for 14 points.
The Mountaineers go on the road on Thursday, Dec. 9, to open BIG EAST play at Villanova. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
