Women's Soccer: Four Land All-Region Honors

MORGANTOWN,W.Va. – Four West Virginia women’s soccer players were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s (NSCAA) all-Northeast region teams, including a first-team selection for midfielder Bri Rodriguez.
Rodriguez becomes the ninth different Mountaineer to earn first team NSCAA all-region honors. Junior Erica Henderson was named to the second team while senior Kerri Butler and sophomore Bry McCarthy landed a spot on the third team.
Rodriguez, an Aurora, Ill., native, earns her first all-region honor after leading the Mountaineers in assists (7) and finishing tied for second in goals (7) to amass 21 points. The midfielder was named first team all-BIG EAST and a second team ESPN/CoSIDA academic all-district selection. Rodriguez is eligible for NSCAA All-America honors and is a Soccer News Net Player of the Year candidate.
A Rochester, N.Y., native, Henderson logged every minute this season at center back to anchor the West Virginia defense. She scored a goal in WVU’s comeback win over Villanova and earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 20. Henderson helped the defense hold nine opponents to three shots on-goal or less this season.
Butler, a Fredericksburg, Va., native, led the conference in shutouts, recording a school-record 14 clean sheets on the season. She was named a second team all-BIG EAST goalkeeper in her final year. Butler carried a 0.82 goals-against average and is the school’s leader in career shutouts.
An Ajax, Ontario, native, McCarthy proved to be a vital part on Mountaineer set pieces, contributing six assists on the season – good for second best. She also scored two goals to total 10 points from her outside back position. McCarthy played an intergral part in the defense’s school record 14 shutouts.
Twenty players have earned 31 NSCAA all-region honors under 15th-year coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.
The Mountaineers had their school record 14-match win streak end in the NCAA “Sweet 16,” giving WVU a final record of 18-5-1. The 18 victories tie the 2002 and 2007 teams for most wins in program history. Women’s soccer also won the 2010 BIG EAST Championship, becoming the first WVU program to win multiple BIG EAST tournament titles.
