MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Following a strong performance at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, West Virginia University redshirt freshman Nathan Pennesi was named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week.
The Latrobe, Pa., native came in second place in the 133-pound weight class after facing some of the nation’s most talented wrestlers. He was defeated in the championship bout by the No. 2 wrestler in the country, Boise State’s Andrew Hochstrasser, by decision, 2-8, having earned reversal points in the third period of the match.
"(Nathan) Pennesi continues to move quickly and has shown a lot of improvement over the early part of this season,” WVU coach Craig Turnbull says. “For him to be in the championship match is a credit to his hard work.”
Pennesi, ranked 14th in the country for his weight class, earned three victories by decision as the No. 3 seed in his bracket, including one over sixth-seeded Luis Carranza of Great Falls by major decision, 16-3. He also beat Oregon State’s James Roberts by major decision, 14-3, to advance to the final bout.
The engineering major owns an impressive 16-3 record on the year, including a perfect 6-0 in dual meets and a win over Oregon State’s No. 8-ranked Kelly Kubec at the Las Vegas Invitational two weeks ago. He has registered 65 near-fall points thus far in the season and also has 40 takedowns. His three losses are to ranked opponents.
His strong finish helped the Mountaineers to a 12th-place mark to end the tournament. Teammate Shane Young (125 pounds) contributed with a fourth-place finish in his weight class.
