Football: Three Defensive Players Honored

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Several West Virginia University football players recently received honors for their performances over the season. Cornerback Keith Tandy and defensive end Bruce Irvin have been named to SI.com’s 2010 All-American list, while Robert Sands has been named to the Sporting News All-American Team.
Tandy, a redshirt junior and native of Hopkinsville, Ky., led the BIG EAST in interceptions and tied for No. 5 nationally in that category. He was also second in the conference in passes defended with nine pass breakups and six interceptions. Currently, Tandy ranks fifth on the team in total tackles with 54.
Irvin, a junior and native of Stone Mountain, Ga., led the BIG EAST in sacks with 12, also tying for No. 3 in the nation. His totals on the season consist of 19 tackles, including 16 unassisted stops, 12 sacks, one pass breakup and one forced fumble.
A junior from Carol City, Fla., Sands was a dependable leader for the Mountaineers’ secondary. A starter at free safety, Sands finished the regular season with 45 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and an interception.
The Mountaineers (9-3) will next take the field against North Carolina State (8-4) in the Champs Sports Bowl to be played at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN/ESPN3.
