MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With a nine-point effort in its final rotation, the Blue team overcame a one-point deficit and defeated the Gold team, 25-20, in tonight’s West Virginia gymnastics intrasquad meet.
Though judges were present, the Mountaineers did not receive official scores. Instead, each gymnast earned one point for staying on the apparatus and one point for a stuck landing.
“I saw a lot of good routines tonight,” says 37-year coach Linda Burdette-Good. “There were a few mistakes, but I think that’s always to be expected in a preseason meet. Though there were some nerves tonight, I think they were due to the team’s high expectations. This squad has worked so hard over the last four months, and everyone was very prepared. We have three weeks now to work through some of our missteps and to get ready for our first regular-season meet.”
Down one point, the Blue team stole the meet in the final rotation, as four Mountaineers scored two points each. Seniors Faye Meaden and Stephanie Keaton opened the rotation with solid showings, and following a combined three-point effort from Alaska Richardson and Amy Bieski, Tina Maloney secured the win, anchoring the lineup with a new routine and scoring two points.
Richardson’s stick on vault gave the Blue team an early 5-4 edge through the first rotation. Senior Emily Kerwin, serving as the anchor, paced the Gold team on bars and stuck a new dismount.
The Gold team used a strong vault lineup to swing the score in its favor, 9-8, after two rotations. Newcomers Kaylyn Millick and Hope Sloanhoffer shone for the squad, as each stuck her vault and earned two points. Bieski helped the Blue team keep pace with a hit bars routine and a stuck dismount.
With four gymnasts scoring eight straight points on floor, the Gold team pushed its lead to 17-16 in the third rotation. The Blue team stayed in the hunt, with Richardson anchoring the squad’s lineup with a strong, clean routine.
The Gold team closed the meet on beam and scored three points.
The Mountaineers open their regular season on Jan. 7, against No. 13 Missouri, at the Cancun Classic in Cancun, Mexico.
