MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team withstood a furious air rifle relay from visiting No. 7 Murray State and earned a 4675-4661 victory this evening at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers’ (3-1, 1-0 GARC) 2328-2306 smallbore victory proved to be the difference today, as the Racers were too strong in air rifle and defeated WVU, 2355-2347.
“Today was a very close match, but our overall team scores were pretty consistent and I am happy that we got the win,” fifth-year Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond says. “Though I would have liked to have seen higher individual scores, I thought the team responded well this morning, despite having just shot yesterday afternoon.
“We gave a 100 percent solid effort today, but as I said before, there is still room for improvement.”
Senior Nicco Campriani earned his second-straight combined score victory, finishing the day with a score of 1185. The Racers’ Kaitlin Cleven shot 1175 and finished in second place. WVU junior Michael Kulbacki tallied an aggregate score of 1172 and tied MSU’s Emily Quiner for third place.
Campriani finished first in smallbore with a season-high score of 592 (200 prone, 197 standing, 195 kneeling), one shot off of his school record. The Florence, Italy, native’s 200 prone and 197 standing scores were both school records.
Quiner finished second in smallbore with a score of 586, while Kulbacki shot 583 (200 prone, 192 standing, 191 kneeling) and finished in third place. Included in Kulbacki’s day was a school record 200 prone mark.
Cleven outshot everyone in air rifle and won the individual discipline competition with a 596 score. Campriani finished in second with a score of 593 (99-98-99-100-100-97), and Kulbacki shot 589 (99-96-100-97-100-97) and earned his third third-place finish of the day.
Today’s victory is WVU’s first over MSU since 2001, and improves the Mountaineers’ series advantage to 19-3.
The Mountaineers finished the weekend at 2-0, having opened their Great American Rifle Conference season with a 4681-4586 win over No. 16 Memphis yesterday.
WVU will take to the road next weekend for the first time this season and travel to West Point, N.Y., for a pair of matches against Top 10 teams. The Mountaineers will take on No. 6 Mississippi on Saturday, Nov. 13, before shooting against host, No. 5 Army on Sunday. WVU’s meeting with the Black Knights is a schedule change, as the two teams were previously slated to meet on Nov. 12.
