MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coaches and player quotes from Saturday’s women’s basketball game against Fairmont State.
West Virginia Head Coach Mike Carey
We got to see what we needed to see tonight--some of our weaknesses and some of what we do well. I told the girls at halftime and after the game that I knew who was going to play well, I knew who was going to get beat on defense and I knew who wasn’t going to play hard, because what happens in practice happens in the game. There’s no mystery when you get into the game.
I also relayed to them that they won’t get a second chance on Nov. 12th and it is for real then. I’m going to play people that play hard and I’m going to play people that listen and did things that we wanted. Also, I told Korrine (Campbell) and Sarah (Miles) to get healthy, because that’s probably the biggest thing we can do between now and the 12th.
Fairmont played hard and did what they could do, but you still have to get up in the lanes and make them turn it over. They really couldn’t run their offense and they were trying the back doors, but we did a pretty good job snapping our heads and not giving up the back doors.
WVU Senior Guard Liz Repella
We just really wanted to focus on our defense. In practice, we haven’t been at our best on defense, so we really wanted to crunch down on getting up the lanes, denying their back doors and getting on the boards. It can get sloppy when we play a Division II team considering we still had a lot of turnovers, so we want to work on cutting down on stuff like turnovers.
WVU Freshman Guard Brooke Hampton
I was nervous, anxious and excited before the game. There were so many emotions that I felt, because it’s a big jump coming in from high school and playing the first game in college. Once I got on the court I was fine, but I felt the butterflies when I was in the locker room and getting ready to step on the court. Once I’m on the court, I feel like a normal player and I’m ready to go.
FSU Head Coach Steve McDonald
We can take a lot from this game. I’ve seen women’s Final Four basketball teams in the past few years and West Virginia is as good as any of those Final Four teams. They are good at every position; they’re good with Sarah (Miles) being injured. Their post players are much improved and their post players can score. I think Liz (Repella) is playing at an exceptional level and they’re awfully good.
We had some kids do some things in the second half that resembled what we’re trying to do. You may not know it, but we’ve averaged 20 wins a season for the past 10 years, we’ve won championships. We’re not used to being pounded, so our kids may not take it very well because we aren’t used to it.
