Rowing: WVU Takes Home Two Medals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team left Fairfax Station, Va., today, after winning a silver and bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan regatta.
“It was the first race for the novice squad and it was great to have such a big squad representing the Mountaineers," says associate head coach Tina Griffith. “All of the boats competed well, with two top three finishes in the Novice four and Varsity four races, and top 10 finishes for the other boats, includng the Varsity and Novice eights.”
WVU’s Varsity four ‘A’ boat, made up of Courtney Schrand, Karen Verwey, Alita Meyers, Rachelle Purych and coxswain Anastasia DuPont, led the Mountaineers with a second-place finish (19:02.42) behind George Mason (18:55.56). The Varsity four ‘B’ and ‘C’ boats followed, finishing seventh (19:48.11) and fifteenth (20:23.31) out of 31 entries.
In its first race of the year, WVU’s Novice four ‘A’ boat took home the bronze after crossing the line in 21:40.57, followed by the Mountaineers’ ‘B’ and ‘C’ boats in seventh (22:43.72) and sixteenth (25:44.43) out of 26 boats.
WVU also had a good showing in the open eight competitions, in which the Varsity and Novice ‘A’ boats finished in the top ten out of 25 boats in their respective races.
“It was, once again, another step forward in our progress and we are working hard to make our next big move,” adds Griffith. “We have been really competitive in the fours and we are working toward expanding that competitiveness to the eights. Now, we are able to have better internal and daily competition with having such a big team.”
The Mountaineers will close out their fall season on Nov. 13, as they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the Philadelphia Frostbite.
