LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated by Louisville on Friday evening in the Wright Natatorium. The Cardinal men defeated WVU, 183-112, while the Mountaineer women fell 186-105.
"Today we learned a lot about what it takes to compete against a very good team," said coach Vic Riggs. "We had some very good swims today but as a group we are still looking for breakout swims from our depth athletes when we are racing away from home."
Junior Taylor Camp led the men with a first-place (49.35) finish in the 100 fly, while also finished second (1:50.21) in the 200 fly. Junior Brandon Carr also swam in the 100 fly and was able to place third (50.95).
Freshman Tim Squires continued his early season dominance and took first (20.75) in the 50 free. Junior Brad Eichenseer took third in the event for the Mountaineers.
Junior Eric Johnson had top performances in the 100 back (53.10) and 200 back (1:53.80), where he finished third in both races. Sophomore Jared Goldthorpe was able to take second in the 200 back (1:50.90).
Sophomore Hugh Simmonds had a first-place finish in the 200 free (1:41.25), while sophomore Jake Querciagrossa took third in the 400 IM (4:09.55).
Freshman Richard Pokorny and junior Matt O’Neill took second (283.72) and third (279.00), respectively, on the 1-meter board.
To finish the meet, the 400 free relay team of Camp, Squires, Eichenseer and Simmonds took second with a time of 3:03.95.
“The 400 free relay for the men was very good,” said Riggs. “Going from not being competitive against them in this relay in the past, to nearly beating them today, only gives us the confidence that we can compete against the best in the big east.”
The women were led by sophomore Kata Fodor who finished first (10:07.55) in the 1,000 free, while taking second (4:57.70) behind sophomore Rachel Burnett in the 500 free. Burnett took first in a time of 4:56.93. Burnett also swam to a second-place (4:29.76) finish in the 400 IM and a third-place (2:05.64) finish in the 200 fly.
Senior Lyn Ann Nelson and sophomore Mandie Nugent also had a first-place finishes for West Virginia. Nelson finished the 200 free in 1:51.48, while Nugent took the 200 fly in 2:01.32. Nugent also took second (56.82) in the 100 fly.
“The divers had another strong performance for the men and they continue improve each meet,” added Riggs.
West Virginia will travel to Cincinnati tomorrow for a 1 p.m. meet with Bearcats at the Keating Aquatic Center. Last season in Morgantown, the Mountaineers men’s and women’s teams both defeated Cincinnati.
