LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The West Virginia men’s soccer team continues to aim for a BIG EAST Championship with a quarterfinal match at No. 1 Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. The game will be held at the Cardinal Park Soccer and Track Stadium.
This is West Virginia’s first appearance in the quarterfinals since 2007 when the Mountaineers fell to Louisville in a 2-2 shootout loss. West Virginia is 1-2-1 all-time in conference quarterfinal matches.
"Louisville is a good team and Ken Lolla is a great coach. They’re obviously very talented and have done very well this season," coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "They’re the No. 1 ranked team in the country, but it’s not the first time we’ve played a No. 1 ranked team and hopefully the result goes as well as last time we played a No. 1 ranked team."
West Virginia comes into the game with a 10-6-2 overall record and they last defeated South Florida, 2-1, on Wednesday in the first round of the tournament. After a 1-1 tie at halftime, sophomore Eric Schoenle scored his fifth goal of the season in the 50th minute to put West Virginia up for good.
Louisville is a perfect 14-0-2 and is led by fifth-year head coach Ken Lolla. The Cardinals have out-scored their opponents, 33-10, and have taken 113 shots on-goal to opponents 40.
"They’re so stout, they’re such a great defensive team, as well as an offensive team," LeBlanc said. "They’re a complete package and are legitimately the No. 1 ranked team in America. We’ve been pretty explosive and we’re not going to hold back. We’ve been good a breaking good defensive teams down this season."
The trio of Dylan Mares (8G, 2A), Colin Rolfe (5G, 5A) and Nick DeLeon (6G, 1A) combine to have scored 19 of Louisville’s 33 goals this season. Goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux has played in all 16 games with a goals-against average of 0.59 and has record six shutouts. Boudreaux has only given up 10 goals on 30 shots.
There will be two other quarterfinal games tomorrow with Georgetown hosting Providence at 1 p.m., and Marquette traveling to Notre Dame at 6 p.m. The final quarterfinal game will be on Sunday between Cincinnati and the winner of DePaul/Connecticut.
