MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will travel to Fairfax Station, Va., on Nov. 6, to compete in the Head of the Occoquan at the Sandy Run Regional Park.
Racing is set to begin at 11:30 a.m., with the women’s collegiate open eight race and will conclude with the women’s collegiate open four event at 2:45 p.m.
“We're continuing to work on racing at a higher base-rate for this time of year,” says coach Jimmy King. “Last weekend's weather conditions hampered that effort, so we're hoping for fairly neutral conditions this weekend to better gauge our progress.”
WVU will be competing against a large number of schools including Ohio State, Duquesne, Georgetown, St. Joseph’s, George Mason, Delaware and Navy.
The Mountaineers have 10 boats competing in the regatta, with two entries in the collegiate varsity and novice open eight events and three boats in the collegiate varsity and novice open four races.
“This is the first competition of the year for our novice squad,” adds King. “We're looking forward to seeing how they perform in their first regatta representing the Mountaineers.”
In last year’s regatta, the Mountaineers’ varsity open four team ‘A’ boat finished with a bronze medal for the second year in row.
