MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – The West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will start BIG EAST competition this weekend when they travel to Louisville on Friday, Nov. 5, and Cincinnati on Saturday, Nov. 6.
“This weekend always offers us the chance to see where we are and what we need to do to get better as a team and in our individual and relay events,” coach Vic Riggs said.
West Virginia (men 1-0, women 1-1) were last in action on Oct. 23 when the women took on Marshall, defeating the Thundering Herd, 170.5-124.5. The Mountaineers had first-place finishes in all of the swimming events except one with sophomore Mandie Nugent had wins in the 100 fly and 200 fly.
“The ladies have had a great two weeks of training since the Marshall meet and both Louisville and Cincinnati will offer different challenges for them,” Riggs said. “I am looking forward to seeing how we compete and both meets will offer great racing.”
The men faced Penn State in a 125-116 victory in the WVU Natatorium on Oct. 16. Matt O’Neill finished first on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. O’Neill also broke the pool record on the 1-meter. Senior George Farquhar swam to first place in the 200 breast, while junior Taylor Camp and sophomore Jared Goldthorpe each finished the 200 fly and 200 back in first place, respectively. Freshman Tim Squires was able to get his first-career victory in the 50 free.
“As the last two meets for the men until the UNC Nike Cup, Louisville and Cincinnati will offer some great racing,” Riggs said. “Louisville is the defending BIG EAST Champion on the men’s side and it will be a great opportunity for the guys to compete.”
Louisville (men 0-1, women 0-1) had both teams fall to Tennessee in the season opener on Oct. 21. The Volunteers edged the men 197-103 with the Lady Vols prevailing 186-113. The women also placed fourth in the SMU Classic last weekend.
The Cardinals were led by Carlos Almeida in the meet against the Volunteers with Almeida finishing first in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. Brandon Andrews won the 100 free, while Pedro Oliveira finished first in the 100 fly. Eszter Povazsay took first for the women in the 200 back, with Therese Bergstrom finishing first in the 200 breast.
Cincinnati will travel to Pitt to face the Panthers the evening before the Bearcats meeting with West Virginia. Earlier in the season, Cincinnati split victories against Xavier with the women winning 182-87 and the men falling 137.5-127.5.
The men had first-place finishes from Nathan Williams in the 200 free, Nate Kramer in the 500 free and Haywood Miller in the 100 breast and 200 breast. Drew Ross also finished first on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Liz Hansson led the women with wins in the 100 back and 200 back, while Victoria Jacumski finished first in the 100 breast.
Friday’s meet with Louisville will be held in the Ralph Wright Natatorium and starts at 5:00 p.m. Saturday’s showdown with Cincinnati at the Keating Aquatic Center will start at 1:00 p.m.
