MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics and wrestling teams will jointly play host to Michigan State in the first-ever WVU ‘Beauty and the Beast’ meet on Friday, Jan. 14, at the WVU Coliseum, at 7:30 p.m.
The meet will serve as the home opener for both squads.
Each team will compete against the Spartans on the Coliseum floor simultaneously, providing fans the opportunity to watch two Mountaineer teams at once. January’s meet will be the first ‘Beauty and the Beast’ contest for both WVU head coaches.
“Other schools speak of their own meets so enthusiastically, I’m excited that we’re finally able to host our own ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at WVU,” says 37-year gymnastics coach Linda Burdette-Good. “I think this will be a fun venture, and it’s an entertaining and unique opportunity for all Mountaineer fans.”
“This is a concept that coach Burdette-Good has talked about for years, and this seems like the perfect time to experiment with it,” says 32-year wrestling coach Craig Turnbull. “This is a novel concept and has a lot of potential to bring in two different groups of fans and expose them to both sports. Hopefully, it creates a lot of energy, and we’ll get some crossover fans that enjoy what they see.”
Turnbull’s squad opens its season this Saturday, Nov. 6, against Maryland, Liberty and McDaniel, in College Park, Md. The Mountaineers’ first match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Burdette-Good’s team will play host to its annual Gold-Blue intrasquad meet on Friday, Dec. 10, at the Coliseum, at 7:30 p.m. The Mountaineers open the 2011 season against Missouri at the Cancun Classic on Friday, Jan. 7, in Cancun, Mexico.
