Swimming: WVU Completes Day Two

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia swimming and diving teams finished the second day of competition at the UNC Nike Cup on Friday evening at the Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The men are in fifth place with a score of 232 points, while the women sit in fourth with 265 points.
The men started their day off with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Junior Taylor Camp, senior George Farquhar, junior Brandon Carr and freshman Tim Squires finished the event in a time of 1:31.66.
Sophomore Rachael Burnett then recorded an NCAA “B” cut with her 4:18.54 fourth-place finish in the 400 IM. Four other Mountaineers placed in the finals with sophomore Sloan Storie finishing 13th (4:28.50), sophomore Austen Carrington finished 15th (4:33.40) and senior Caroline Larsson placing 20th (4:32.74).
Freshman Jake Querciagrossa scored points in the 400 IM with his 14th-place finish in 4:03.89. Sophomore Tim O’Malley and junior Ian Stavros finished in 19th (4:06.40) and 24th (4:11.52), respectively.
Sophomore Mandie Nugent finished the 100 fly in fifth (55.61) for the women, while classmate Nikki Vetterlein took 23rd in a time of 58.53.
Camp had West Virginia’s first, first-place finish of the event in the 100 fly (48.64). Carr and fellow junior Martin Vanis each took 17th (50.53) and 22nd (51.22), respectively, for the Mountaineers.
Senior Lyn Ann Nelson provided West Virginia with points in the 200 free, finishing in an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:49.16 for fourth place. Sophomore Kata Fodor also swam in the “A” finals and took seventh (1:51.19). Nugent finished 11th (1:51.89) to round out the West Virginia participants.
For the men, Goldthorpe finished the 200 free in 10th in 1:39.74. Sophomore Hugh Simmonds also swam the 200 free, placing 11th (1:40.56).
Junior Jaryn Studer and sophomore Breanna McCann continued their successful meets in the 100 breast. Studer took tenth in 1:03.75, while McCann finished 15th in 1:05.46. Freshman Melissa Schreiber took 22nd as well in 1:07.48.
In the 100 breast, Farquhar scored a 13th-place finish with his time of 57.90. Sophomore Graham Kauffman and junior Jack Greenhalgh also each placed for the Mountaineers with Kauffman coming 19th at 58.07 and Greenhalgh 24th in 59.34.
Freshman Danielle Smith provided the women with a 17th-place finish in the 100 back in 57.01. Vetterlein and redshirt sophomore Sara Conner placed 22nd (58.43) and 23rd (58.81), respectively.
Goldthorpe continued to impress in the 100 back with a time of 50.01, good enough for second place. Junior James Butler also swam the event taking 22nd in 52.80.
The women completed the day with a second-place finish in the 800 free relay. A team made up of Burnett, Nugent, Fodor and Nelson finished in 7:23.10.
The men’s team also had a great ending to the day with a fourth-place finish in the 800 free relay. The team of Goldthorpe, Camp, Querciagrossa and Simmonds finished in 6:44.58.
The team will begin the final day of competition on Saturday morning with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals starting at 6 p.m.
