MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 19, 2010) – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia rifle team secured its fourth-straight Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) win with a 4657-4498 victory over visiting NC State today, at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers (6-1, 4-0 GARC) swept the Wolfpack (0-4, 0-2) in both disciplines, winning smallbore 2301-2231 and air rifle 2356-2267. Additionally, WVU secured the top seven individual finishes in each gun.
“Our air rifle score was really the positive from today’s match,” says fifth-year coach Jon Hammond. “Everyone shot 580 or better, and that’s the first time we’ve done that this season. Smallbore wasn’t as strong today, but that’s OK. We’re still working on things there. Overall, I’m pleased with today’s efforts and this was a good win.”
Junior Michael Kulbacki led all shooters today with an aggregate score of 1171. The DuBois, Pa., native registered the only school record of the day, as he shot 200 prone.
Senior Kyle Smith shot 1169 and finished in second place, while classmate Tommy Santelli tallied 1167 and finished third.
Madeline Pike and William Teller each shot 1132 to lead the Wolfpack.
Smith paced the smallbore field with a score of 583 (199 prone, 191 standing, 193 kneeling). Kulbacki shot 580 and finished in second place, while senior Brandi Eskew and Santelli each shot 574 and tied for third place.
Santelli took the top spot in air rifle and shot a season-high 593 (100-97-98-99-100-99). Kulbacki shot 591 for second place, and senior Andy Lamson registered a score of 587 for third.
Also of note, senior Andraz Poje finished in seventh place in air gun with a personal-best 580.
Eskew, Lamson (570), Santelli and Smith combined for WVU’s smallbore mark, while Lamson, Kulbacki, Pentz (585) and Santelli were credited with the squad’s air rifle score.
Today’s win pushes the Mountaineers’ series advantage to 12-0. Additionally, since falling to No. 2 TCU on Oct. 24, WVU has earned five consecutive victories.
The team returns to the Range on Sunday and plays host to No. 9 Nebraska at 8 a.m., the Mountaineers’ final competition of the fall season.
