MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The UNC Nike Cup started on Thursday with both the West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams having standout performances. After one full day of action, both squads sit at fifth place.
The Mountaineer men notched 105 points, trailing North Carolina (455.5 points), Navy (250), South Carolina (231) and Duke (194), while the women finished the day with 114 points, behind North Carolina (452), South Carolina (180), Duke (157) and East Carolina (135).
“In finals we focused on being better than the morning and racing. We starting off the night with the 200 free relays and both the men's and women's ‘A’ teams went in-season best times,” coach Vic Riggs said. “Our 500 free swimmers did a great job on their adjustments from the morning swims and Rachael (Burnett) getting third was a great start.”
The 200 free relay team of junior Taylor Camp, freshman Tim Squires, junior Brad Eichenseer and freshman Zach Chow started the men off with a third-place finish in the finals with a time of 1:22.38.
Then women had four advance to the finals in the 500 free with Burnett placing third in an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:48.08. Senior Lyn Ann Nelson and sophomore Kata Fodor also recorded NCAA “B” cut times with sixth- (4:51.90) and seventh- (4:51.91) finishes, respectively. Sophomore Mandie Nugent placed eighth (4:53.93) in the event.
Sophomore Jared Goldthorpe finished 11th (4:29.55) for the men in the 500 free, while sophomore Hugh Simmonds finished in 20th place (4:33.43).
Sophomore Breanna McCann and junior Jaryn Studer scored the Mountaineers only points in the women’s 200 IM. McCann took seventh (2:04.21), while Studer finished in 16th (2:08.50).
Junior Brandon Carr took 18th (1:54.65) for the men in the 200 IM.
In the 50 free, Eichenseer finished with a time of 20.83 for 11th place, while Squires finished 12th (20.84).
“Hugh and Jared made great adjustments and swam much better at night,” Riggs said. “Jaryn, Breanna and Brandon all had very fine 200 IM races and we were proud of Brad and Tim going under 21 seconds in the 50 free.”
The men then closed the day with a sixth-place finish time of 3:21.54 in the 400 medley relay. Goldthorpe, Farquhar, Camp and Eichenseer made up the team.
Action will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. A complete recap will follow at MSNsportsNET.com.
