MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The 10th-ranked West Virginia women’s basketball team will play its second game of the week against Delaware State at the Coliseum on Friday night.
The first 1,000 kids and WVU students in attendance will receive free West Virginia Silly Bandz.
The meeting marks the third time these two teams will have met on the hardwood, with each team previously coming away with victories. The Mountaineers (2-0) have not faced the Lady Hornets (0-0) since 2003, and come into the game with a 54-3 all-time record at home against non-conference opponents, while carrying a 7-1 record against teams that are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The game will be Delaware State’s season opener. The Lady Hornets finished the 2009-10 season with a 6-24 record and lost its two leading scorers from that team. The top returning scorers are senior Brittany Washington (7.1 ppg) and redshirt-sophomore Tonya Clark (5.8 ppg). Washington also averaged eight rebounds per game last season.
The Mountaineers are coming off of two straight home victories in which the offense has responded to coach Mike Carey’s call for more scoring by putting up 80 and 69 points respectively. Senior co-captains Liz Repella and Madina Ali have put up 36 points each through two games, while also collecting a combined 30 boards.
“I thought Madina Ali played well and has played hard and well in both games this season,” Carey said after the win over Duquesne Wednesday night. “I thought Liz Repella played hard for a full 40 minutes; I never took her out.”
Senior Korinne Campbell contributed 10 points while recording two steals and one block in 24 minutes of play against Duquesne. In the opener against Loyola, she recorded four points, four rebounds and one steal in only 14 minutes of action, as she was recovering from a preseason ankle injury.
“I think they’re a legitimate Top 10 team. They have so many weapons,” Duquesne coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said after her team’s loss on Wednesday night. “It’s basically pick your poison. They have Liz Repella who can knock down shots if you leave her, and (Asya) Bussie and (Madina) Ali inside; they’re just a presence on the floor. We had to bring a double team so often.
“I think Korinne Campbell is the unsung hero of that team. Her versatility and being able to go three and four; she creates mismatches,” McConnell-Serio added.
Sarah Miles is expected to make her second start of the season on Friday night, along with Ali, Repella, Campbell and Asya Bussie.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on MSNsportsNET.com.
