MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No.1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team used a season-best score to march past No. 6 Mississippi, 4686-4647, this afternoon at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, N.Y.
The match was the team’s first away from the WVU Rifle Range this season.
Today’s victory is the Mountaineers’ (4-1, 2-0 GARC) second win over a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) opponent in seven days, as WVU, the reigning GARC regular season and postseason champions, opened its conference season with a win over No. 16 Memphis on Nov. 6.
WVU outshot the Rebels (3-2, 1-1 GARC) in both disciplines, winning air rifle 2358-2343, and smallbore 2328-2304.
“We had a really good day today,” says fifth-year Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “I’m really pleased with our overall consistency, especially in a different venue. We put a lot of importance on competing well away from our range, and I was glad to see we were able to produce today.”
For the third-straight match, senior Nicco Campriani finished first overall, as the Florence, Italy, native shot a combined score of 1188, one shot short of his school record.
WVU senior Tommy Santelli finished in second place with an aggregate score of 1166, while classmate Andy Lamson finished in third place with a score of 1163.
Abbey Stanec and Kim Coffey paced the Rebels with individual combined scores of 1162.
Campriani, the reigning air rifle world champion, matched his own school record with a 598 (99-100-99-100-100-100) score to finish first in the discipline. Lamson and Ole Miss’ Keely Stanky each shot 589 and tied for second place. Junior Justin Pentz, as well as Stanec and Coffey, finished tied for fourth place with scores of 586.
Campriani also finished first in smallbore with a score of 590 (199 prone, 194 standing, 197 kneeling). Santelli shot 584, one short of his personal-best mark, and finished in second place, while senior Kyle Smith shot 580 and finished in third place.
Today’s win improves the Mountaineers’ series advantage to 6-3. WVU has now won the last four straight shoulder-to-shoulder matches against the Rebels.
WVU returns to the range tomorrow and will shoot against host No. 5 Army at 8 a.m.
