MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 12, 2010) – Four weeks into the 2010-11 season, the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opens its road schedule with a two-match swing against Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) opponents in West Point, N.Y., on Nov. 13-14, at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
WVU (3-1, 1-0 GARC), the reigning GARC regular season and postseason champions, will shoot against No. 6 Mississippi on Saturday, and host No. 5 Army (1-3, 1-2 GARC) on Sunday, with both matches set for 8 a.m. starts.
“It’s good for us to get out on the road and shoot some matches,” says fifth-year Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “This should be a good weekend. You can learn a lot from shooting in a different range, though most of our team has shot in West Point before.
“I am looking forward to the team getting two more conference matches under their belts and gaining more experience. I have seen some promising shooting these last few weeks, but everyone has to keep working to improve.”
The Mountaineers own a slight 5-3 series advantage over the Rebels (3-1, 1-0 GARC), having won the last three straight shoulder-to-shoulder matches, including a 4696-4576 decision in Cokeville, Tenn., last season. Ole Miss finished fourth at the 2010 GARC Championship.
WVU’s series with the Black Knights (1-3, 1-2 GARC) dates back to 1957, with the Mountaineers owning a 30-10 advantage. After dropping four consecutive shoulder-to-shoulder matches (2005-08), WVU has regained control of the series and won the last two meetings, including a 4638-4562 victory at the WVU Rifle Range last year.
Army, which finished in fifth place at last season’s conference championship, is the second of three past national champions the Mountaineers will face this year. WVU lost to reigning champion TCU, 4675-4663, on Oct. 24, and will face 10-time national champion Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 22.
The Mountaineers are coming off two home wins, having defeated No. 16 Memphis, 4681-4586, on Nov. 6, and No. 7 Murray State, 4675-4661, the following day. Senior Nicco Campriani swept the individual competitions, shooting combined scores of 1179 and 1185, in consecutive days.
This weekend’s matches will both play into the afternoon.
