Rowing: Mountaineers Travel to Philadelphia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will travel to Philadelphia on Saturday, Nov. 13, to close out its season at the Philadelphia Frostbite regatta.
“We expect each crew to relish the opportunity to compete in an environment that's much more exciting than in the typical fall head race, which is more of a time trial event,” says coach Jimmy King. “The rowers have demonstrated that they can race in different combinations and still experience some degree of success, which is indicative of our improving depth.”
WVU will be one of sixteen programs competing on Saturday, and will have 12 entries participating in the regatta, including five novice boats and seven varsity boats.
Due to limited space, the Philadelphia Frostbite regatta only allows six entries per race, in comparison to the unlimited entries permitted in most fall races.
“This regatta will expose the novice crew to the kind of racing they will be doing in the spring,” adds King. “It will give them a better idea of what to look forward to next season.”
The racing is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s master double competition, in which WVU will have three entries. The Mountaineers will also have three boats in the Novice four event, along with two boats in the Novice open eight, the Varsity open four and the Varsity open eight races.
“For the varsity crews, this regatta is a fun way to cap the fall racing season because side-by-side racing is the norm in the spring season,” says King. “The varsity crews are racing more consistently, both physically and mentally, in comparison to earlier this season and last fall.”
The Mountaineers finished last week’s race at the Head of the Occoquan with two medals, one which was won by the Novice four ‘A’ boat in its first race of the year.
“The novice squad handled the last race very well, in terms of being on task and competing,” associate head coach Tina Griffith concludes. “Although our next race is a different format, getting that first race under our belt was a successful and confidence building experience.”
