MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell in five sets this evening to BIG EAST foe Georgetown at the WVU Coliseum.
The Hoyas (13-8, 3-2) defeated the Mountaineers (17-8, 2-3) in a 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 16-14) match.
The Mountaineers jumped to a quick lead in set one, after a service ace from senior middle blocker Lauren Evans put WVU up 10-4. However, the Hoyas fought back with 12 kills, including four from Brooke Bachesta, and five service aces to take set.
Senior Abby Norman started things for WVU in the second set, as she posted two kills for a 3-1 lead. The Mountaineers continued to roll with three-straight kills from Norman, followed by an ace from senior libero Bonnie West to give them a 15-8 advantage. Evans then ended the set with her sixth kill of the match.
The Hoyas returned to regain the momentum in the third set, as Bachesta landed five of Georgetown’s 14 kills for the win.
Refusing to fall, the Mountaineers gained a 12-7 lead in the fourth set after a block from Norman. The Hoyas came back to within one, until a kill from Evans and a Georgetown error sent the match into five sets.
A Georgetown block gave them an 8-7 advantage at the beginning of set five. However, with the Hoyas at match point, a kill from junior middle blocker Abby Monson gave WVU some energy to come back and tie the set at 14. Despite their best efforts, the Mountaineers fell after a final kill from Bachesta.
WVU was led by Norman who posted a season-high 19 kills with a .333 hitting average, while Evans followed with 12 kills.
Junior setter Kari Post had 46 assists, while West had 23 digs.
WVU continues action on Sunday, Oct. 10, with a 1 p.m. match against USF at the Coliseum.
