Rowing: Mountaineers Begin Fall Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will begin its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 9, as it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., to compete at the Head of the Ohio regatta on the Allegheny River.
WVU will be one of over 75 colleges and universities to participate in the day-long regatta.
“We've only been on the water about three weeks now, and the team is eager to face some competition and see where we start this year,” says coach Jimmy King.
The Mountaineers will be competing in three events with two boats in the open eight and open double races, and three boats in the open four competition. The team will begin racing at 9:25 a.m. with the open eight event, followed by the open doubles at 11:15 a.m. and the open four race at 1 p.m.
“The fall season is simply part of our training plan,” says King. “At each regatta, we'll evaluate our results based on our performance, relative to our own expectations at that time. We can't accurately gauge how we’re doing solely on our competition when teams are experimenting with different line-ups.”
WVU returns several veterans this year and has added three newcomers to the squad, including freshmen Morgan Leach, Courtney Schrand and Karen Verwey.
“We're preparing this fall by spending more time in small boats and teaching everyone to scull,” adds King. “Off the water we've always utilized running as a regular form of cross training, but this year we've made some adjustments to how we implement that and I think we're already seeing some results there. Most importantly, we are continuing to build a stronger team in every sense of the word.
