Women’s Basketball Officially Opens Practice

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s basketball team officially opens its practice schedule at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct 5 at the WVU Coliseum.
The practice schedule opens earlier than it has in the seasons past as the NCAA changed its legislation to allow women’s basketball programs to start as early as 40 days prior to their first scheduled contest. Friday, Nov. 12 marks the opening of the regular-season schedule as the Mountaineers will take on Loyola University Maryland in Morgantown.
Although the team has 40 days to practice, the NCAA still limits the team to 30 practice opportunities within the 40 days. The change is only applicable to women’s basketball.
“This year is the first year we’ve been able to start this early,” Coach Mike Carey says. “Everyone is excited. The players are excited to get out of the weight room and off the track and onto the floor to concentrate on the game. We’re excited to see what we can do this year.”
Preseason ranked No. 9 in two national publications, WVU returns all five starters in senior Madina Ali, all-BIG EAST honorees Liz Repella, Korinne Campbell, Sarah Miles and all-BIG EAST freshman team member Asya Bussie.
The entire 2010-11 roster will be introduced to the public at Mountaineer Madness presented by Coke Zero, Friday, Oct. 15 at the WVU Coliseum.
