MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will play host to its annual Professional Scout Day on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m., at Hawley Field.
All 30 Major League Baseball teams and the Major League Scouting Bureau are invited to watch the team workout tomorrow and participate in an intra-squad game.
“While the primary goal of our program is for our student-athletes to do great academically and graduate, we also want to see them succeed on the diamond and have a chance to play baseball when they have completed their studies,” says 17-year Mountaineer coach Greg Van Zant. “Our scout day is designed to increase our athletes’ exposure to professional baseball teams, and it is one of the highlights of our fall season.
“Tomorrow’s intra-squad game is our 16th contest of the fall season, and while the guys treat every game with equal importance, I know that they have all had this game circled for several weeks.”
Prior to tomorrow’s intra-squad game, the Mountaineers will run through several skill evaluation drills, including a pro-style defensive workout for position players and a pregame infield/outfield drill.
Six draft-eligible pitchers are slated to see the mound tomorrow: redshirt seniors Marcus Broadwater and Matt Morrone, senior Jonathan Hash, juniors Jonathan Jones and Josh McCauley and redshirt sophomore Andy Podolinski.
Should inclement weather impede tomorrow’s Pro Scout Day, the Mountaineers will hold a make-up session on Wednesday, Oct. 6, also at 4 p.m., at Hawley Field.
Following tomorrow, the Mountaineers will continue their fall season through Oct. 21. The 21st annual Gold-Blue World Series is scheduled for Oct. 16-18, at Hawley Field. The series’ first pitch will be on Saturday, Oct. 16, at noon, with one game schedule for 5 p.m., on Sunday and Monday.
