Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall in Five

Syracuse, N.Y. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Syracuse in five sets this afternoon at the Women’s Building in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Orange improved to 22-6 (4-6 BIG EAST) after they defeated the Mountaineers (14-12, 4-6 BIG EAST) in a 3-2 (18-25, 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 15-10) match.
Set one started with a 3-1 Syracuse lead, until senior middle blocker Lauren Evans posted a kill to regain the serve and the lead as WVU went on a 7-0 run. The Mountaineers continued to dominate as they posted 15 kills to take set one after a kill from junior outside Serinna Russo.
The Orange returned in set two with a strong defensive showing to capture the win from the Mountaineers.
Set three started with another Syracuse lead until WVU fought back with two kills from senior middle blocker Abby Norman and a service ace from junior setter Kari Post for the lead. The two teams continued to battle until two-straight kills from setter Laura Homann captured the victory for the Orange.
With the momentum in favor of Syracuse, WVU battled back from behind in set three, as junior outside hitter Serinna Russo aided the Mountaineers with four kills and seven digs for the win.
However, with their home court in jeopardy, the Orange posted a strong in showing to capture set five and the match.
Russo recorded one of her best matches of the season with 11 kills and 23 digs, while junior Kylie Armbruster posted 15 kills
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum next weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Cincinnati on Saturday, Nov. 6.
