Men's Soccer: Mountaineers Fall to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite holding a 9-5 shot advantage, the West Virginia men’s soccer team fell to Providence, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I.
The Friars broke the tie in the 41st minute after a shot from Andrew Sousa was blocked and went out of bounds to draw a corner kick for Providence. Anthony Baumann took the corner and the ball was headed out of the box by senior Dan Hagey. The ball went right to the feet of PC’s Daniel Fabian, who crossed the ball into the box and Matt Marcin headed the ball past senior goalkeeper Zach Johnson and into the right side of the net.
West Virginia had the majority of the opportunities including a chance in the 6th minute after Hagey played a long ball into the offensive zone to sophomore Peabo Doue. Doue had a one-on-one with Providence goalkeeper, Jhojan Obando, but was unable to keep control of the ball.
Freshman Allan Flott had an opportunity in the 32nd minute as he blasted a ball from about 20 yards out that Obando punched over the net to clear out of bounds.
The Mountaineers finished the half with a 5-2 shot advantage. Doue led all players with two shots.
Junior Nick Claudio was inserted at the forward position a few minutes into the second half and had an opportunity on a spin-around shot in the 66th minute that Obando was able to block.
Johnson made a fantastic save in the 73rd minute on a shot from Giuseppe Guerriero that was Johnson right into the lower right side of the net before Johnson punched it out.
On the counter, Hagey nailed a ball from 25 yards out that was blocked by a PC defender.
The match saw West Virginia called for 23 fouls, compared to Providence’s 10, while the Mountaineers also received three yellow cards to the Friars one.
Johnson became the all-time minutes played leader in the game and has a total of 7,233 minutes played in four years of action. Johnson finished the match with two saves.
The Mountaineers finish the season with a record of 9-6-2 and now make a quest towards the BIG EAST Championships. The Mountaineers already clinched home-field advantage for the first round and will be playing on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
