Women's Tennis: Mountaineers Finish with a Title

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team completed the Queen City Classic today, in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a flight ‘A’ title, a consolation title and a runner-up in the singles competition.
“We showed a lot of heart in matches where we could have easily given up,”said coach Tina Samara. “Having six players on five courts was a great showing for us on the last day.”
Freshman Melis Tanik took the first title of her career in the flight ‘A’ singles competition after defeating UC’s Ashleigh Witte, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, in the final-round. Junior Ashley Pilsbury finished as the runner-up in flight ‘B’ after falling in a tiebreaker to Xavier’s Ally Westling.
Sophomore Emily Mathis also had a good showing in the singles competition, where she won the flight ‘A’ consolation draw over UC’s Ksenia Slyncko in a 6-2, 6-0 match.
“We finished strong with Melis winning a title, while Ashley fell a bit short in a tough tiebreaker,” added Samara. “Emily also did a great job winning the consolation in the ‘A’ draw.“
Junior Catie Wickline and freshman Anna Rodionova competed against each other in the consolation 'D' finals, in which Rodionova took the title.
The Mountaineers will continue action on Oct. 8-10 as they travel to Newport News, Va., to compete in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational.
