LOUISVILLE, Ky. – West Virginia senior Megan Mischler netted two goals in leading the WVU women’s soccer team past Louisville, 2-1, on a windy Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park Soccer and Track Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
With the scored knotted at 1-1 at the half, Mischler helped WVU regain the lead in the 52nd minute with her second goal of the match. The forward finished a short pass in the box from midfielder Bri Rodriguez, blasting a ball into the back of the net from six yards out for the game-winner.
“Mischler was awesome today,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “This is her senior year and she has really worked hard the last few weeks. She really earned those goals today.”
The Mountaineers improve to 7-4-1 (3-1-1 BIG EAST) on the season, while the Cardinals dip to 8-4-0 (2-3-0 BIG EAST). WVU is 4-0-1 all-time against Louisville.
“I’m very proud of this team,” said Izzo-Brown of her team’s four-match unbeaten streak. “To go on the road against two teams who have been ranked this season and pull out victories, that says a lot about the effort our ladies are giving right now.”
Mischler attempted half of the Mountaineers’ 16 shots as her eight shots were a career high. The two-goal effort was the third of her career.
West Virginia took a 1-0 lead at the 17:15 mark on Mischler’s third goal of the season. Defender Meghan Lewis took the ball up the right side and found Mischler open in the middle of the box. Mischler turned and slotted a ball on the ground, inside the right post for the score.
Louisville tied the match in the 29th minute on a shot from midfielder Julie Casselman. Midfielder Caitlin Rehder sent a ball from the left corner into the box where Casselman one-timed a ball into the right corner of the goal from nine yards out.
The UofL goal snapped the Mountaineers’ scoreless streak at 368 minutes. WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler and her back line last allowed a goal in the first half against Marquette on Sept. 23.
“We played three league games this week and our legs were starting to feel it,” said Izzo-Brown. “We gave them too many corner kicks but our defense answered the call on several occasions against a good Louisville team.”
WVU’s defense has allowed only three goals in the last seven matches – a span of 650 minutes.
WVU’s Rodriguez earned the assist on the game-winner, giving the sophomore a point in three consecutive matches.
Midfielder Ashtin Larkin got into the mix with a long-range blast in the 21st minute. Larkin’s shot was a line drive at the goal, bringing Cardinals goalkeeper Taylor Vancil to her knees to make a save.
Louisville finished with 13 shots, including three each from Casselman and midfielder Jennifer Jones, and only three shots on-goal.
WVU also had two goals waived off from offsides calls in the 50th and 59th minutes. Frances Silva slipped behind the defense and Caroline Szwed headed in a rebound off a free kick from forward Blake Miller that hit the crossbar.
WVU resumes its conference road swing with matches at Syracuse on Oct. 8 and at St. John’s on Oct. 10.
