MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team finished its 2010 fall season today, as freshman Melis Tanik concluded her run in the singles consolation draw at the ITA Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va.
Tanik dominated the first two rounds of the singles consolation draw after defeating Virginia Tech’s Emily Lauten, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round, followed by a 6-3, 7-7(0) victory over Howard’s Katelyn Stokes in the second round.
Tanik was set to compete in the round of 16, tomorrow, but the remainder of the consolation matches were canceled.
“Melis did a great job of trying things outside of her comfort zone, today,” says coach Tina Samara. “She had lapses where she strayed from the game plan, but ultimately she managed to get back to it when it mattered. It was a good way to finish the fall season.”
This concludes the Mountaineers’ 2010 fall season. WVU will continue action in the spring of 2011, in their first regular season under coach Tina Samara.
