Women's Tennis: Tanik Falls in Singles Competition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University tennis player, freshman Melis Tanik, concluded her run in the singles competition today, while competing at the ITA Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va.
“Melis fought hard, but she is learning that she needs to be more versatile to compete at this level against top players in the nation,” says coach Tina Samara. “She’s a hard worker and I am confident that with some time, she will prove that she can compete with these top players.”
Tanik’s performance throughout the fall season made her the only Mountaineer to automatically qualify for the main draw of the singles competition.
With a wide range of strong opponents and no prior experience at a collegiate regional championship, Tanik was defeated in the first round by Penn State’s Petra Januskova in a 6-1, 6-2 match.
“Hopefully she will bounce back from this and win some good matches in the consolation,” concludes Samara.
Tanik will continue competing at noon tomorrow, as she goes up against Howard’s Brittney Morgan in the singles consolation draw.
