MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia faces Syracuse in a Big East Conference game at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 23, at noon. The homecoming game will be televised nationally by ESPN2 (Bob Wischusen and Brian Griese).
MSN’s coverage (Tony Caridi, Dwight Wallace, Hoppy Kercheval and Jed Drenning) begins with the Mountaineers Today at 11 a.m. Sirius Satellite Radio listeners can access the MSN broadcast on channel 122 and channel 143 with the Best of XM.
Here is Saturday’s Countdown to Kickoff:
10 – West Virginia has four players showing at least TEN receptions so far this year. Jock Sanders leads all WVU receivers with 36 receptions, followed by Tavon Austin’s 32 grabs and Noel Devine’s 17 catches. Stedman Bailey has 13 catches.
9 – The Mountaineers have NINE players with 24 or more career starts heading into Saturday’s game against Syracuse, including four (Jock Sanders, Chris Neild, J.T. Thomas and Scooter Berry) with 30 or more career starts.
8 – West Virginia’s defense produced a season-high EIGHT sacks against Maryland and now shows 18 for the season.
7 – West Virginia has had SEVEN scoring drives of 10 plays or longer this year, including a pair of 16-play scoring drives against Coastal Carolina and Maryland.
6 – West Virginia’s defense held Syracuse to just SIX points the last time these two teams faced each other at Milan Puskar Stadium in 2008. The Mountaineers eked out a 17-6 victory that year.
5 – Sophomore quarterback Geno Smith has thrown at least two touchdown passes in FIVE of six games so far this season. The only game Smith failed to throw at least two TD passes was against Marshall when he threw just one touchdown. Smith shows 14 touchdown passes in six games so far.
4 – Noel Devine needs just 39 yards to pass Steve Slaton to move into FOURTH place on WVU’s career rushing list. Devine shows 3,885 yards heading into Saturday’s game against Syracuse.
3 – Jock Sanders needs catches in four more games to pass Miami’s Reggie Wayne for THIRD place in consecutive games with at least one reception among Big East receivers. Sanders presently has catches in 34 straight games heading into Saturday’s game against Syracuse.
2 – Saturday’s game will be the SECOND time West Virginia coach Bill Stewart and Syracuse coach Doug Marrone match wits on the gridiron. Last year, West Virginia defeated Syracuse 34-13 in Syracuse, N.Y.
1 – West Virginia ranks FIRST in the Big East in scoring defense, rushing defense, pass defense, total defense, pass efficiency defense, third down conversions, opponents third down conversions and fourth down conversions.
