MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s swimming and diving team will travel to Huntington, W.Va. for a meet with Marshall on Saturday, Oct. 23. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. in the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
“It’s always a good opportunity to compete as a women’s team,” coach Vic Riggs said. “It will give us a chance to grow and learn our weaknesses. Competing in the 16-event format allows the ladies to swim four events which will be beneficial for them.”
The Mountaineers enter the match with an 0-1 mark after falling to Penn State, 174-67 last weekend. Senior Lyn Ann Nelson took first place in the 200 free, while sophomores Kata Fodor and Rachael Burnett finished first in the 1,000 free and 500 free, respectively.
Marshall comes into the meet with a 1-1 record after defeating Radford, 154-83, last Friday and then falling to Xavier, 122-77, on Saturday.
On Friday, the Thundering Herd finished first in 12 of the top 13 events. Newcomers Tiffany Aeling and Sarah Kay finished first in the 1,000 free and 200 fly, respectively. Saturday saw Vera Niemeyer, Sarah Schimenti and Kay all place first even though the team was unable to clinch the victory.
The Thundering Herd are under the direction of Russell Hunt who is serving as the interim head coach for the duration of the 2010-11 season. Hunt previously was an assistant at Colgate.
Last season, WVU defeated Marshall 126-105. Burnett placed first in the 200 free and 500 free, while Fodor finished first in the 1,000 free.
