Women's Tennis: Day One at ITA Regionals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team concluded day one of the ITA Regional Championships today, in Norfolk, Va., where the Mountaineers’ four competitors were defeated by several tough opponents.
Sophomore Emily Mathis put up a fight in the qualifying round of the singles competition, but was denied the opportunity to join freshman teammate Melis Tanik in the main singles draw after a 6-2, 6-2 loss against Marshall’s Maria Voscekova.
“We had a tough day, but the cards were stacked against us in a few spots,” says coach Tina Samara. “Emily competed hard, but lost her second match to a big hitter. However, she made some tactical progress.”
In the round of 32, Mathis captured the Mountaineers’ lone win in a 6(8), 6-3, 6-0 tiebreaker against Navy’s Erin Snook, but fell short after being defeated by Voscekova. Juniors Veronica Cardenas and Kathryn Haught also did not qualify for the main singles draw.
“This was Katie (Haught)’s first event this fall season due to injury, so as expected, she was a little rusty in match play,” adds Samara. “Veronica came to this event unsure if she would be able to compete due to a leg injury.”
In doubles action, Mathis and Tanik were stopped short of a victory when the pair was barely defeated by U.M.B.C.’s Kim Berghaus and Emily Mannix, 9-7. Cardenas and Haught also fought hard, but lost in a close 8-5 match against Howard’s Brook Hawthorne and Brittney Morgan.
“In doubles, Melis and Emily had opportunities, but were unable to get it done,” concludes Samara. “We realize that we have to get better at executing when we have the opportunity.”
Tanik is set to compete in the main singles draw tomorrow, as WVU’s only participant left in the competition. Tanik will go up against Penn State’s Petra Januskova at 11 a.m.
